Volkswagen has initiated recall campaigns across international markets following the discovery of defective high-voltage battery cells in its electric vehicles.
The recall follows internal quality control checks that identified potential manufacturing faults originating from battery suppliers during a specific production period. Affected battery cells may experience increased thermal stress, presenting a potential fire risk in extreme cases.
Around 22,000 ID.4 electric vehicles are subject to recall actions in the United States, with campaigns also under way in the UK and Germany. German business newspaper Handelsblatt reported that the issue potentially affects VW ID.3, ID.4, ID.7, ID. Buzz, and Cupra Born models produced between 2023 and 2025.
A spokesperson for Volkswagen stated that the group is preparing the recall in close coordination with relevant regulatory authorities.
As an immediate precautionary measure, Volkswagen recommends that owners of potentially affected vehicles restrict charging to a maximum of 80 per cent capacity. Affected vehicles will be inspected at authorized service centres. Where no defect is detected, the charging restriction will be removed; where faulty cells are identified, rectifications will be carried out using hardware replacements or software updates.
The manufacturer confirmed it will contact affected vehicle owners directly to outline required servicing steps.
