Due to the weak car market, fewer vehicles were submitted for general inspection in 2024. Nevertheless, TÜV Nord was able to gain ground and expand its market share.
Last year, Tüv Nord bucked the trend by issuing more cars with new inspection stickers than in the previous year.
While the number of general inspections declined by around 0.5 percent nationwide, Tüv Nord recorded a 3.5 percent increase, as the company announced at the Hannover Messe. “All inspection organizations lost. Only we gained,” said Hartmut Abeln, Managing Director of Tüv Nord Mobility. “As a result, we have significantly expanded our market position.”
Of the 31 million general inspections conducted nationwide, approximately 3.5 million were carried out by TÜV Nord. While the total number decreased by 166,000, TÜV Nord increased by almost 122,000. With a market share of just under 12 percent, the company ranks fourth nationwide behind the testing companies Dekra, TÜV Süd, and GTÜ.
Abeln attributed the overall decline in the number of MOTs for the first time in years to the weak car market. While new cars aren’t yet required to undergo MOTs, Abeln said that with every new car purchase, a used car is usually traded in. And the dealer wants to offer it for sale with a new inspection sticker, even if the two-year inspection period hasn’t yet expired. Fewer trade-ins therefore also lead to fewer MOTs.
The fact that Tüv Nord was nevertheless able to grow is thanks to growing business outside its traditional core market in northern Germany. “We launched a pan-Germany strategy a few years ago and are now penetrating the markets in southern Germany as well,” said Abeln. “This allows us to gain market share outside of our original core market area.” In return, the established providers there are losing market share. “This is a predatory competition.”
The Tüv Nord Group increased its revenue to €1.69 billion in 2024, up from €1.58 billion in the previous year. Operating earnings before interest and taxes grew from €84.5 million to almost €90 million. In addition to the general inspection segment, the Tüv Nord Group also includes other business areas related to technology and certification in Germany and abroad. The group employs almost 13,200 people worldwide, including 8,300 in Germany.
