At a car workshop in the western city of Remscheid, authorities discovered a cache of hundreds of automatic guns and military equipment concealed in hidden compartments, officials have stated.

According to prosecutor Wolf-Tilman Baumert, during the search, authorities found another stockpile of weapons that included explosives, rifles, ammo, and military-grade weapons.

Officials commented, the majority of the weapons, some of which were from World War II, had been fixed and were operational. Anti-tank weapons, grenades, explosives, and handguns were also found in the rooms.

During the raid on Sunday night, the shop owner, a 59 year old male, was taken into custody by the police. Along with two other suspects, he is still being held on suspicion of being an illicit arms dealer with global ties.

The suspect had no prior police record and had not been reported for having extreme right-wing beliefs, according to the newsmagazine Der Spiegel. But in the basement of the shop, detectives discovered Hitler paintings and Nazi-era flags. There are no known ties to the far-right Reichsburger movement, which opposes the legitimacy of the German state.
