Is it Goodbye to the sticker

Spain: 180-degree turn in ITV stickers: the list of vehicles that will no longer have to carry them

The Vehicle Inspection ( ITV ) is a procedure that all vehicles have to undergo from time to time. The most common thing is that every year we have to take our car, motorcycle or truck for a check-up. This way we guarantee that our vehicle is in perfect condition to be able to drive on the roads safely. Once we have passed the ITV and they give us the approval, we have to stick the sticker that proves it in the upper right corner of our front window so that the agents can check that we are driving a safe vehicle. But this could change. We will tell you all the details in this post.

In Spain, there are currently 34 million cars in circulation, including passenger cars, motorcycles, trucks, buses and mopeds. But this figure is constantly increasing, so it is important that everyone passes the MOT to ensure their own safety as well as that of others. What’s more, if you drive without the MOT sticker, even if you have passed it, you can be fined 100 euros if you are stopped. It is mandatory to carry it in plain sight.

MOT for historic vehicles

As we said, vehicles generally pass the MOT annually, although there are some exceptions, such as if your car is new, in which case you will have to wait four years until you have to pass this Technical Vehicle Inspection. But be careful, because there are more exceptions and we are going to tell you about them.

The General Directorate of Traffic has established a new regulation that will benefit historic vehicles. Thus, vehicles registered before 1964 will not be required to undergo an annual MOT, but will be able to extend this period after the Council of Ministers approved this regulation that came into force on October 1.

Thus, vehicles registered before 1964 will be classified as historic vehicles and, as they are declared technical and cultural heritage, the period to pass the ITV will be

  • Biennial . For vehicles between 30 and 40 years old.
  • Triennial . For vehicles between 40 and 45 years old.
  • Quadrennial . For vehicles over 45 years old and motorcycles.

Goodbye to the sticker

The sticker that we have to carry in the upper right corner of the windscreen of our vehicle could have its days numbered. In fact, the idea is that soon it will not be necessary to carry it. This would save the cost of manufacturing the stickers and, in addition, it will be more comfortable and practical. Nor would those who are absent-minded and forgetful who never stick it on be fined.

The way to check whether vehicles have passed the MOT or not will be through an application through which agents can find out by the registration number whether this procedure has been carried out or not . This measure could be implemented from next year 2025.

It should be noted that, as confirmed by the employers’ association, the implementation of this application and the disappearance of the physical sticker does not only depend on the DGT : “The regulation is contained in the General Vehicle Regulations, approved according to Royal Decree 2822/1998, of December 23 (Annex XI signs on vehicles – V-19 ITV Badge)”.

There is no set date yet and we will have to keep waiting, but everything points to the fact that sooner rather than later the stickers will no longer be necessary. Of course, we will have to be very careful not to miss the date on which we have to pass the next Technical Vehicle Inspection, since when we have it on the sticker we have it in sight every time we use our private means of transport.
