Europe: Annual technical inspection! a new charge for motorists?

The European Union is considering imposing an annual technical inspection for vehicles over 10 years old. Currently, in France, it must be carried out every two years. While this measure aims to improve road safety, it risks increasing the bill for millions of drivers in France! Indeed, more than half of the French vehicle fleet is over ten years old, with an average age of around 11.

This proposal could therefore impact a large majority of motorists, particularly those on modest incomes who rely on older vehicles for their daily commute. The cost of the technical inspection, which varies between €60 and €100 depending on the region, would double for these drivers, not to mention possible re-inspections, billed between €20 and €40, if defects are detected.

“If this measure comes into force, it will have a direct financial impact on drivers who are already heavily burdened by rising fuel prices, repairs, and insurance. In France, this would represent an average additional cost of 80 euros for motorists. Once again, it will be the poorest households and young drivers who will be the most affected. Safety yes, but not at the expense of purchasing power”, warns Christophe Dandois, co-founder of the neo-insurance company Leocare.

However, that a lack of technical inspection represents an offense. In the event of an accident, the insurance company has the right to reduce or even not compensate the insured.
