France: Activity in workshops down 7.5% in the first quarter of 2025

According to the Mobilians-Solware barometer, turnover in mechanics and body shops fell by 7.5% during the first quarter, notably hampered by the decline in workshop entries. On the automotive distributor side, Feda finally notes an increase in activity. 

Activity in garages recorded a decline between January and March 2025. The mechanical workshops surveyed for the Mobilians-Solware barometer reported a turnover of 173.7 million euros, a decline of 7% (vs. 186.8 M in Q1 2024). Turnover generated by parts (-7.3%), labor (-6.1%) and workshop entries (-8.9%) are down, while the average basket increased by 2.1% (€401.1 on average per basket). 

As for body shops, the panel shows a turnover of 35.7 million euros, a decline of 9.6% (vs. €39.5 M in Q1 2024). Labor and workshop inputs are also in the red, down 9.7% and 11.4% respectively. Similarly, sales from parts are down almost 10% (-9.9%). Conversely, the average basket size is up 2% (€1,696.7 on average per basket). 

Furthermore, the activity of automobile distributors increased by 2%, after a month of February in decline of 2.9%. According to the Feda barometer , it thus increases by 0.1% during the first quarter of 2025. In detail, the LV activity is up by 2% in March. Mechanics is up by 3%, while equipment & tools and workshop services are growing by 4%. The painting-bodywork activity remains stable (+ 0%) after several months in the red (- 1.5% in February and – 1.4% in March 2025). 

Among heavy goods vehicle distributors, activity also increases by 2% in March. And all the indicators are green, whether it concerns parts for end customers (+ 3%), workshop services (+ 4%) or equipment & tools (+ 1%).
