France: Car models with potentially dangerous airbags in France

Millions of vehicles made between 1998 and 2019 are affected by a potentially dangerous airbag defect, with France’s Transport Ministry urging affected drivers to seek a free diagnostic and replacement.

The defective airbags manufactured by Japanese company Takata are ammonium nitrate based, and thought to become increasingly unstable with age – a process accelerated by hot and humid conditions.

The problem can cause these airbags to fail to deploy in case of an accident, or in extreme cases, to deploy at the wrong time.

They were fitted in a wide range of brands, many of which have already contacted drivers and proposed to fit replacement airbags for free.

What to do about defective Takata airbags?

If your vehicle was manufactured between 1998 and 2019, it may contain a defective airbag.

The problem will not cause your car to fail a contrôle technique,  however it will be raised on the receipt slip.
