Italy: The MOT bonus is back but expires at the end of the year: what it is, how to get it

Little publicised and shamefully communicated at the last minute, it is an opportunity to save some money

Italy: The MOT bonus is back but expires at the end of the year: what it is, how to get it

Somewhat surprisingly, among the measures contained in the 2025 tax decree linked to the Budget, the car inspection bonus has also reappeared , suspended for a year and now available again, although with very tight deadlines for those who want to take advantage of it. The deadline is in fact the end of the month , but let’s see what it consists of and what you need to do to get it.

The reactivation of the “Safe Vehicles” bonus aims to once again meet the needs of those who, during 2024, have had their vehicle inspected , as required by the Highway Code, and who wish to save some money. Let’s make it clear right away that this is not a large sum – the contribution is in fact equal to 9.95 euros – and it is necessary to rely on authorized garages in order to hope for the reimbursement application to be accepted. In fact, this is not a discount – those who have yet to do it will be charged the full rate – but by filling out the appropriate form on the site you will receive, by bank or postal transfer, the expected sum.

The vehicles that can benefit from the contribution are light quadricycles, mopeds and motorcycles, minibuses up to 15 seats and all vehicles with a weight not exceeding 35 quintals and to request the contribution, the procedure should be the same as in the past, although there has not yet been an official communication on the matter. The website www.bonusveicolisicuri.it is not currently active – it was taken offline at the end of 2023 once the application deadline had expired – but, given the deadline of December 31, it is hoped that it will happen as soon as possible.

Let’s assume that everything has remained the same and that therefore access to the platform is strictly via Spid, or the Public Digital Identity System with which you access the online services of the public administration: once you have entered, you will need to fill out the form by entering the tax code of the applicant, the vehicle’s license plate and the IBAN of the current account on which you will receive the refund. The request can be made only once and for only one vehicle, only the owner can do it and it is valid only for inspections carried out from 1 January to 31 December 2024.

The inspection has a fixed cost of €79 euros if you choose to do it at the authorised centers while it is 45 euros if done at the Civil Motorization and is mandatory after 4 years from the first registration, while subsequent ones are every two years. Among the checks to which the vehicles are subjected, the effectiveness of the brakes and handbrake, tire wear, lights and direction indicators, horn (must be equal to or greater than 93 decibels), windshield wipers and finally compliance with the emission limits.
