The long-awaited temporary exemptions by The Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) in Northern Ireland for some private cars to address long MOT test waiting times has been running for two months now, but problems remain.
Since June 1st, eligible vehicles have been granted a one-year temporary exemption certificates (TECs) from MOT testing, aiming to reduce pressure on testing centres. The DVA anticipates a six-week improvement in waiting times by the end of the financial year.
Despite this measure, booking an MOT test remains challenging in some areas. Several test centres have no available appointments for the rest of the year, with some offering slots as late as Christmas Eve.
The DVA acknowledges the ongoing high demand for testing services and advises motorists to book appointments as early as possible and be prepared to travel to different test centres.
While the TEC scheme offers temporary relief, the DVA is working to increase capacity through new test centres and recruitment efforts.
Motorists are encouraged to check the DVA booking system regularly for available appointments.
